Magnetic field line reconnection near a neutral point has been diagnosed in a large laboratory plasma. A 1 m in diameter, 2 m long pulsed argon discharge plasma is immersed in a constant, uniform, axial bias magnetic field of 20 G and subjected to a time dependent transverse magnetic field, associated with an axial electric field. The vacuum field geometry contains an X-type neutral point on the axis of the device. The induced, space charge and net electric fields in the plasma were measured directly and electrostatic fields are found to be as important as induced electric fields. The temporal development of the transverse magnetic field was measured with two orthogonal magnetic loops and vector maps and contour plots showing the evolution of a broad neutral sheet and slow shocks are presented. Measurements of current distribution confirm the sheetlike current structure.
