Physical processes associated with flare X-ray and far-UV radiation are examined. The thermal and nonthermal interpretations of hard X radiation from solar flares are briefly reviewed, and two types of source for flare-associated soft X-ray and UV radiation are considered. A complex source model for impulsive UV flare radiation is proposed which is based on magnetic-field line reconnection in current sheets and which takes into account thermal conductivity, accelerated electrons, and radiative transfer of flare energy. The role of classical and anomalous thermal conductivity in chromospheric heating by thermal and charged-particle fluxes is discussed.
