This article is a review of the idea of the geoid, of methods for determining the shape of the geoid and of the significance of the shape so determined. The idea of the geoid is introduced by relating it to survey operations at the surface of the earth, and certain aspects of the geometry of the geoid are then considered. Methods of determining the size and form of the geoid are explained and discussed and the results currently available are summarized. Relations between the form of the geoid and the internal constitution of the earth are indicated and some outstanding problems are mentioned.
