In the past few years there have been interesting reports of ``naked'' Seyfert 2s, objects with the narrow optical emission line spectra characteristic of Seyfert 2s but with the bright, essentially unabsorbed X-ray spectra typical of Seyfert 1s. These AGN apparently lack broad-line regions (BLRs), in contradiction of the unified model. To date, the only naked Seyfert 2s confirmed by simultaneous optical and X-ray data show evidence for low accretion rates. It is therefore important to determine if there are any examples of Seyferts with moderate-to-high luminosities that lack BLRs. We propose simultaneous XMM and optical observations of Mrk 883 and Mrk 609, two moderate-luminosity naked Seyfert 2 candidates, to unambiguously determine if these AGN truly lack BLRs.
