We propose a 100 kilosecond observation of the M~31 globular cluster G1. This cluster is an extremely strong candidate for containing an intermediate mass black hole -- it shows evidence for an increase gravitational potential towards its center from radial velocity measurements, as well as evidence for an accreting intermediate mass black hole in the form of X-ray and radio detections. Deep XMM observations will produce the first good X-ray spectrum of this object together with the first measurement of its variability power spectrum. These diagnostics combined will allow us to test conclusively the assertion that this object is an IMBH.
