The accretion-disk geometry and the source of soft photons in the hard state of accreting black holes remain a point of debate. In contradiction to the standard scenario of a truncated disk in the hard state, results in the last three years seem to suggest that in four black holes in the hard state the disk is not truncated, but extends down close to the innermost stable circular orbit. These results, however, have recently been contested. Here we propose two XMM-Newton observations of 40 ks each, to study the hard-state spectra of two BH X-ray transients at low interstellar absorption: XTE J1118+480 and XTE J1817-330. We will search for soft emission and/or a broad iron line to test the extent of the inner accretion disk.
