IT has been suggested1 that the red-shift Z = 1.95 observed
in quasars has special significance. We have therefore attempted to
detect absorption in the ground state hyperfine transition of neutral
hydrogen atoms, normally at 21 cm, red-shifted to 62 cm wavelength of
the continuum flux of the quasar 3C 191.
