The theoretical framework usually adopted in cosmological (and astrophysical) modelling and in the interpretation of the observational data tacitly includes the assumption of structural stability. Here with the help of a number of examples we argue that such a framework cannot be assumed a priori and that it is important to take seriously the possibility that the appropriate theoretical framework might turn out to be that of structural fragility. Some of the consequences of such a framework are briefly discussed.
