Temperature data obtained between 1969 and 1979 are used to explore the response of the stratosphere and lower mesosphere to a quasi-eleven-year solar activity cycle (as indicated by sunspot variations). The solar trace is noted at wintertime in the stratomesosphere over low and middle latitudes and is absent in the lower mesosphere over high latitudes. During springtime it is found that the solar signal appears over low latitudes. Possible mechanisms by which solar variations may affect the structure of the stratosphere are discussed.
