The SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) is a joint programme between ESA and NASA to continuously monitor the Sun, its interior, corona and the solar wind. This paper is aimed at explaining how the SOHO spacecraft, launched for a 2-year mission and at a time of solar minimum activity, has seen its mission extended to cover a full solar cycle.
