THEMIS was built with very specific scientific objectives which implied severe instrumental constraints. Both are presented in this paper. Taking into account these constraints, we detail the present instrumental set-up and explain the mid-term projects. Some scientific results are presented in order to illustrate the observational capabilities of the telescope.
