Plasma-stability theory is applied to a buoyant solar magnetic flux tube. Piddington's (1976) model is confirmed whereby a buoyant magnetic field splits up into flux ropes at the solar surface. It is shown that strong twisting of individual flux ropes as a result of the screw instability may disrupt the matter circulation within the ropes and produce a prominence by the Pikel'ner (1971) siphon mechanism. The equilibrium of an individual flux rope of large radius is evaluated.
