Scientific paper

The global MHD stability of an equilibrium model for the plasma and magnetic-field structure of a cool coronal loop corresponding to the loops observed in the EUV from Skylab is evaluated. The equations for the force-free equilibrium magnetic field are given, the components of the general MHD-stability calculation are outlined, and the stability of a Lundquist (1951) force-free field is discussed. End-effect stabilization is examined, and the general MHD-stability calculation is applied to the equilibrium loop model. Limits on the physical parameters of the confining magnetic field are considered.
