Software of the type used to give 3-D images of the human body is finding a place in astronomical research, showing complex astronomical structures clearly and from a variety of viewpoints. The AstroMed collaboration at Harvard has brought together astronomers, medical imaging specialists and software engineers to adapt medical imaging software for astronomical data.
Stars in each of three clusters within the Milky Way have distinct chemical signatures, according to ESO researchers using Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) on the VLT. The high level of homogeneity shown by the cluster stars suggests ``chemical tagging'' can be used to link stars to their common formation sites and hence unravel the history of the galaxy.
Combined satellite and ground-based observations have shown that a 2006 supernova was the brightest and most energetic explosion so far - and it may even be the explosion of a star 150 times the mass of our Sun.
