From extensive magnetic data of 44 years and using an analysis procedure which enables separation of the components of the annual line it is shown that in low latitudes three different components constitute the annual oscillation in the field, a component due to the oscillation of the base level of Sq which is independent of local time, a second component due to the modulation of Sq currents and whose magnitude varies with local time, and a small but significant part associated with disturbance. Analysis of data from a Southern Hemisphere station, Apia, confirms the results from Alibag.
