The paper deals mainly with the UV part of the solar spectrum which interacts effectively with the atmosphere of our planet. The model of the external layers of the solar atmosphere is described briefly and it is shown that each region of the sun's atmosphere emits radiation at different wavelengths. Three main features govern the emission: the supergranulation, the corona, and active regions. The morphology of the disk is described from observations made with balloons, rockets and satellites. The short and long term variability of the solar flux is studied and it is suggested that the long term variability may be of greater importance for climatology. Finally, two indexes currently used by atmospherists, the 10.7 cm flux and Wolf number, are discussed and recommended to be used with some caution.
