It is the purpose of this paper to investigate the propagation characteristics of e.l.f. electromagnetic waves assuming a perfectly conducting Earth and a sharply-bounded homogeneous ionosphere on which a uniform and radial earth's magnetic field is superposed. The author attempted to compare the observational results of the slow tail waveforms with the theoretical results of propagation characteristics in two cases, i.e. with and without a superposed magnetic field. It resulted that it is desirable to take into consideration the magnetic field.
