Modern astronomical observatories are located in remote places, where conditions make it possible to observe deeper into space. Due to the remoteness, scientists have to spend a considerable amount of time travelling to and from the observatory. For this reason there is a need to develop systems which allows the scientist to stay closer to home, while still allowing interactive real-time control of the instrument and telescope. The ESO remote control center in Garching near Munich, Germany, supports remote operation of telescopes at the La Silla Observatory in the Chilean Andes. These systems are based on the fact that the control process is decoupled from the man-machine interface. Modern standardized network protocols and infrastructure make it irrelevant whether or not the man-machine interface is physically located at the telescope site or in another part of the world. The latest of these systems, the NTT remote control system, has now been in operation for six months. The paper describes this project, with emphasis on system architecture, standards and software development and reuse. It also reports on the initial operational experience.
