The investigation of ionospheric winds by the three-receiver method usually leads to a considerable spread of the individual wind vectors and even to sudden reversals of the apparent wind during time intervals of the order of 10 min or less. This well-known behaviour is dealt with by the determination of a "mean" wind vector, whether by the centre of gravity of the cloud of the experimental points or by the diameter of the best fit circle (Putter and Court's method), which supposes the existence of continuous contours of the moving irregularities. The mechanism responsible for similar amplitude fluctuations on three simultaneous field strength records, has already been tentatively explained by several authors on different grounds (large scale ionization transport, internal gravity waves, etc.) but none of these suggestions appears to adequately explain the rather erratic movements which are so often observed during wind measurements. It seemed interesting to us to consider as a possible cause of the similar fades observed and of the apparent drift of ionospheric irregularities, the propagation of ionic wave packets produced by the interaction of solar corpuscular charge carrying beams with the ionospheric plasma. As it will be seen in our paper, this hypothesis is consistent with the physical properties of the media and with the wind velocities usually found (which are of the order of the ionospheric thermal velocities), and also accounts for the rapid wind reversals which are observed.
