Progress made in the last twenty years in the understanding of the origin of supernovae is reviewed. The observational background of supernova studies is first summarized, noting the distinction between type I and type II supernovae, and the evolution of massive stars is considered, with attention given to stars with degenerate carbon cores, stars just above the degenerate carbon limit, iron core stars, helium stars, and the influence of companion stars in binary systems. Consideration is then given to processes associated with degenerate carbon ignition, degenerate oxygen and neon ignition, iron core collapse and pair formation as the final explosive stages in the evolution of stars with mass greater than 8 solar masses.
