An apparent contradiction in the observed character of equatorial electrojets is resolved by the postulation of two distinct categories in terms of which to group these phenomena: the Slow Counterelectrojets, having no clear-cut relationship with the interplanetary magnetic field, and the Short-Period Fluctuations in the equatorial H field, which are fast diurnal events having an intimate relationship with polar magnetic variations. It is expected that the distinction established will eliminate much confusion in observations published in 1975 and 1978.
