The ultraviolet dayglow and the heating of neutral and ionized components by ultraviolet radiation of a model of the Venus atmosphere, based on Pioneer Venus data, is studied. The atmosphere is shown to be 97% carbon dioxide and 3% nitrogen. The thermal structure of the ionosphere and its variations are determined by a combination of dynamical processes and radiative absorption and emission processes.
