The recent suggestion (Root-Bernstein, 1982) that the homochirality of amino acids and sugars in the current biosphere may have originated as a result of novel organic ‘selector molecules’ is examined critically. It is concluded that such selector molecules are non-existent as described, and that their postulation is based on chemical and stereochemical misconceptions.
