Low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) are known to be formed preferentially in globular clusters (GCs). Recent studies of the GC-LMXB relationship in several nearby elliptical galaxies with Chandra and HST data reveal that metal-rich GCs are three times more likely to host a bright LMXB than metal-poor GCs. The irradiation induced wind model developed to explain this surprising trend predicts that the metallicity of a GC should affect the X-ray spectrum of an LMXB. In this article we summarise the current progress of a study of the X-ray spectrum of the LMXBs in NGC 4472, the correlations with cluster properties, and comment on the implications on models using XMM-Newton observations.
