Gamma-ray bursts are potentially powerful probes of the high-redshift universe thanks to their extreme luminosities. They are indicators of star formation, they pinpoint and provide redshifts for their host galaxies, and they provide backlights for absorption line studies of their hosts and the intergalactic medium. Swift has shown that GRBs were certainly produced in the early universe, although the observed rate at very high redshift is low. I review what has been learnt to date about high-z GRBs, discuss strategies for their detection and identification, and consider prospects for the future.
