The Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium Explorer (WHIMex) is an orbiting X-ray observatory designed to provide an order of magnitude improvement in spectral resolution and sensitivity. We present a design consisting of slumped glass optics and a novel off-plane grating spectrograph. The configuration results in >250 cm2 of collecting area with high resolution (lambda/dlambda 4000) in the soft X-ray band (0.3 -0.8 keV). The unique design also allows for a high packing density that will enable a modest cost space mission. We provide an overview of the design and discuss an Explorer mission which was proposed earlier this year with the goal of detecting absorption from intergalactic filaments in the Cosmic Web.
