The ion composition of magnetospheric plasma and energetic particles is the clearest signature of the ultimate source of magnetospheric particles and is of critical importance for a number of processes and space weather effects, including ring current strength, wave growth rates, and satellite surface damage. In the course of magnetospheric exploration, numerous instruments have been flown with the capability of distinguishing ion composition, across essentially the full energy range of relevance, and more will be fielded in the near future. This talk will provide a brief historical review of what composition instruments have been flown, with highlights of their findings.
