The neutral density variation is generally controlled by solar flux variability with maximum densities occurring in the vicinity of the subsolar point. Previous studies of CHAMP accelerometer data have also indicated occurrence of density enhancement at dayside high latitudes that might be related to solar wind and geomagnetic effects. We examined the properties of large neutral density enhancement events observed by CHAMP satellite from during the five years period from 2001 to 2005. To isolate solar wind and geomagnetic effects, we filtered out density variations due to solar flux irradiance, 27-days solar rotation effects and semi-annual variation. Our database consists of large density enhancement events associated with geomagnetic activity as represented by the ap index. Occurrences of these large density enhancements are studied statistically in terms of latitude and local time and as a function of ap index. We show that neutral density enhancement occurs after bursts of interplanetary electric fields derived from the ACE satellite. The statistical results are discussed for better understanding of electromagnetic energy input into the thermosphere.
