The distinctive features of tektites (restricted geographical distribution, aerodynamic shaping, inclusions of nickel-iron spherules and lechatelierites, general dissimilarity with local rocks) are reviewed critically with a view to shedding light on theories of their origin. The two main theories, stipulating terrestrial versus lunar origination (through meteoritic impact in either case), are examined in detail, including evidence on common ages of tektites and certain adjacent impact craters. The information gained from Apollo 11 and 12 landings is used in judging the lunar origin hypothesis. Although one or two exceptional lunar samples do resemble the composition of tektites and microtektites, there is little support for common identity. Pending the availability of further samples from lunar highlands, the balance of probabilities at this stage favours the terrestrial origin hypothesis.
