During recent years the following research activities related to the Earth's magnetosphere were intensified: (1) studies on electric field and energy transfer from the solar wind to the magnetosphere; (2) studies on high latitude magnetospheric electric fields and on their penetration into the plasmasphere; (3) measurements of atmospheric-large scale-electric fields, related to the low latitude magnetospheric-ionospheric coupling and to the local atmospheric electrodynamics, using detectors on boarad stratospheric balloons; and (4) measurements of atmospheric X-rays, related to the process of energetic particle precipitation at the South Atlantic magnetic anomaly, using detectors also on board stratospheric balloons. Similarly, the following research activities related to geomagnetism are being pursued: studies on the variability of the geomagnetic field and on the dynamics of the equatorial eletrojet from local geomagnetic field measurements; studies on terrestrial electromagnetic induction through local measurements of the geo-electromagnetic field; and studies on the influence of geomagnetic activity on particle precipitation at the South Atlantic magnetic anomaly.
