When two physical systems are dynamically coupled, the eigenmodes for the combined system will differ, in general, from the modes for the two original, uncoupled systems. This paper examines certain normal modes of the coupled earth and ocean system and discusses differences from corresponding results for the two inividual systems. Particular attention is paid to those modes which involve wobble of the solid earth. It has been suggested that the coupled system may possess a long-period wobble mode, not part of the spectrum for the solid earth alone,, which might be identified as the Markowitz wobble. The results presented below do not support that conclusion.
