A multiple correlation analysis was made of simultaneously occurring magnetic pulsations and auroral arcs recorded on videotape. The data were gathered at two stations in Saskatchewan in February 1980. The study revealed a relationship between a magnetic deflection pattern and auroral patch brightening, which was accompanied by a pair of divergent and convergent magnetic deflection vectors. The data were fit by a model consisting of two electric current systems, a field-aligned pair current, and a twin vortex current, all induced by pulsating auroral precipitation and the convection electric field. The resulting model offers the capability of predicting the pattern and intensity of the fluctuating electric field below pulsating auroras.
