The transport of test ions through the magnetosheath is investigated as part of the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorer (AMPTE) mission. An approximate numerical model is developed to provide a partial macroscopic configuration of this process. The model satisfies the jump conditions at the bow shock, and treats the magnetopause as a tangential discontinuity. Intermediate field amplitudes and orientations are used which resemble the more precise results of gas dynamic simulations. The guiding center trajectory of an ensemble average particle is analyzed in several interplanetary magnetic field conditions, different locations of the release site, and quiet and disturbed magnetosheath turbulence regimes. Several implications of the results of the simulation are discussed.
