The major source of error in Rb/Sr age determinations on whole-rock samples of shale is the presence of inherited radiogenic strontium in the detrital minerals. As a result, if the shale samples are assumed to have been closed systems to Rb and Sr since deposition, ages measured in this manner are necessarily maxima. In cases where the provenance of the detrital material was young or where there was a major selective enrichment of Rb relative to Sr during the processes of weathering, transportation, and sedimentation, this maximum age may be close to the true age. Nineteen samples of shale from the Hamilton Group (Middle Devonian) of New York and Pennsylvania give an apparent isochron age of 398 ± 12 m . y ., not more than 15 per cent in excess of the actual age of the Middle Devonian as estimated from published data on igneous and metamorphic rocks. The relatively small error in this case is believed to be due primarily to derivation of the sediments from a young source area. Lack of any significant concentration of inherited radiogenic Sr in the coarser particles of the shale precludes the use of an empirical correction to the measured age. The use of whole-rock Rb/Sr chronology for ancient unfossiliferous sediments is recommended.
