A theoretical analysis demonstrates that atmospheric turbulence produces a substantial reduction in the field of view of wavefront-adaptive optical systems. One of the consequences of the perturbing effect of the atmosphere is the residual tremor of extra-axial images in the focal plane of the adaaptive system. Particular reference is made to the comparison of vertical profile structure with stellar observation.
