A new method for extending general relativity, called the method of algebraic extension, is presented. It is shown under certain restrictions that only five theories of gravity, one of which is general relativity, result from such an extension. Lagrangians for the five theories are constructed. The relationship between algebraically extended theories and higher-dimensional theories of Riemannian gravity is outlined.
