A high resolution spectrogram of the Mg b2 line from the quiet sun disk center is subjected to a coherence analysis. It is found that the coherence between intensity fluctuations in the continuum and the wings of the line breaks down at a distance of 0.35 A from line center. From this and the rms intensity contrast as a function of the distance from line center the following simple model of temperature fluctuation in the solar photosphere results: a lower part (below 50 km) with strongly inward increasing temperature fluctuation and an upper part (above 50 km) with constant temperature fluctuation equal to 75 K. The two parts are supposed to fluctuate incoherently.
