Measurements of the solar flux in the Schumann-Runge continuum (1350 to 1750 A) by the Atmosphere Explorer satellites have revealed a pronounced solar cycle variation with a superposed significant 27 day variation. Radiation in this portion of the spectrum is of importance to the lower thermosphere with respect to dissociation of O2. In the present paper, the unattenuated Schumann-Runge continuum dissociation frequency is used as a parameter to demonstrate the magnitude and temporal characteristics of this variation.
