A drift tube-mass spectrometer apparatus has been used to investigate a number of reactions of rare-gas and nitrogen ions with mercury (II) bromide and with elemental mercury (of interest for laser modeling). Rate coefficients with HgBr2 reactant are found to be large (on the order of 3-7×10-10 cm3/sec) at 300 K with ordinary or dissociative charge transfer the dominant reaction mechanism. Except for the reaction N3++Hg, reactions of nitrogen ions with mercury atoms are found to be moderately or very slow.
