Seismic refraction investigations result in an interpolated structural map of the Moho and an isopach map of the net crystalline crust under the area between the Dead Sea rift and the Mediterranean Sea. The maps show that in addition to the known crustal thinning and sedimentary thickening toward the Mediterranean a significant crustal thinning associated with sedimentary thickening probably also occurs from south to north across a generally east-west-trending zone which extends from the Dead Sea to the Mediterranean. It is assumed that this zone indicates a fossil margin of the Arabian continent, in contact with an oceanic or intermediate type of crust.
