The mechanism of Compton scattering by electrons is widely used in the interpretation of observation data on such astrophysical phenomena as the emission of quasars and sources of short X-ray bursts. The present analysis deals with the distortion of emission spectra, owing to multiple scattering by electrons. Particular attention is given to scattering by relativistic electrons, where part of the electron kinetic energy is transferred to the photons at which the electrons are scattered.
