We consider the interaction between membrane inclusions such as proteins embedded in fluctuating membranes. The modification of fluctuations of membranes by membrane inclusions leads to an attractive long-range interaction between them. We characterize membrane inclusions by symmetric-traceless tensors and determine the coupling between the inclusion's characteristic tensors and membrane curvature. Using a field theoretic approach, we find the interaction falls off with the separation R between inclusions as 1/R4. The orientational parts of the interaction depend on the characteristic tensors of the inclusions. These interactions are reminiscent of multipolar forces, and for large R these interactions are considerably larger than van der Waals interactions and electrostatic interactions, and provide the dominant force inducing aggregation of the membrane inclusions. .
