The discoveries of rings around Uranus and Jupiter and of two new rings of Saturn are reviewed. Ring confinement mechanisms are considered, theories on the origin of the Uranian rings are summarized, and the Jovian ring discovered by Voyager 1 is described. The new Saturnian rings and a faint as-yet unidentified satellite beyond the apparent tip of the known rings are also discussed, along with the possibility of detecting rings around Neptune, which is now (at least temporarily) unique among the giant planets in that it does not appear to be encircled by rings.
