In the near-Earth and midtail plasma sheet fast flows play a key role in the magnetotail flux transport processes. In this paper, recent studies on the plasma sheet flows and energy flux from 10 Re back to the midtail are described based on combined ISTP satellites (Geotail, Wind, Interball, Equator-S, and Polar) and auroral observations. The topics include auroral evidence of field-aligned currents generated by localized bursty bulk flows; timing of the flow bursts and auroral development; fast flows and electromagnetic disturbances at conjugate low altitudes. Possible ways how the flow energy might be coupled to the high-latitude ionosphere will be discussed.
