The inner core of many clusters of galaxies is losing energy by the emission of X-rays on a timescale much shorter than its likely age. Although the temperature in this region drops by up to a factor of up to 3 from that of the surrounding gas, no evidence is found for gas much cooler than that. Some form of heating is plausibly taking place, by energy transported outward from a central accreting black hole or inward from the hot outer reservoir of gas. The transport properties (conductivity, diffusion and viscosity) of the intracluster medium are therefore important, yet are poorly understood, especially as the gas is magnetized. The evidence for cooling and heating are discussed. Indications that the gas in the Perseus cluster core is not fully turbulent are shown and some alternative scenarios mentioned. The processes have consequences for the truncation of the luminosity function of massive galaxies.
