Global-scale hybrid code simulations show that auroral Alfven waves originate from turbulence in the near-Earth plasma sheet. The turbulence is generated by the breaking of fast earthward plasma flows. The turbulence is excited by ion-ion two-stream, micro instabilities. Turbulence energy is radiated away from the plasma sheet by shear Alfven waves, which propagate along the magnetic field lines to the auroral ionosphere. The simulations show the outward expansion of the turbulent region. This is reflected in the poleward progression of the field-aligned currents in the near-Earth regions. An animation prepared from the simulations will be shown to illustrate these effects.
