The Bastille Day (July 14/15, 2000) geomagnetic storm was one of the strongest of this solar cycle. It's hallmark characteristic is the extremely strong southward IMF Bz that at one point reached values near -60 nT, and the high solar wind speed that reached values around 1100 kms-1. Simple regression formulas would have predicted a cross polar cap potential of the order of 1000 kV, yet the observed values reach only about 300 kV in the northern hemisphere. A global simulation predicts only slightly higher values. Examination of the simulation shows that the dayside magnetopause is extremely compressed and eroded. As a consequence, the subsolar reconnection region becomes partially shielded from the magnetosheath flow. Thus, Poynting flux towards the reconnection site becomes limited, which in turn limits magnetospheric and ionospheric convection.
