A kinetic model of dipolarization and charged particle injection for the Earth's geosynchronous regions has previously been used to (i) reproduce bounce phase bunched ion distributions and field-aligned ion acceleration, (ii) explain the presence of field-aligned ion distributions, and (iii) predict the generation of magnetic field-aligned electric potentials that may participate in observed field-aligned electrical discharge to the ionosphere associated with injections (Mauk, 1986; 1989). An updated version of that model is used here to explore the generation and consequences of the magnetic field-aligned currents associated with the injection / dipolarization process. We show that the well-known East-West magnetic perturbations ("D-spikes") are probably caused by field-aligned currents actively driven by diversions of transient polarization currents associated with large inductive electric fields. Such D-spikes were thought to be the result of diversion of tail currents that exist prior to the injection. Mauk, B.
