During magnetically disturbed conditions, the magnetospheric ring currents evolve; these evolving ring currents in turn generate polarization electric fields (PEFs). The existence of the PEF is inferred from observations of enhanced ExB plasma drift in the F-region ionosphere. Such electric fields at mid-latitudes, equatorward of the high latitude convection, have been termed polarization jets because of their high zonal flow speeds and narrow latitude distribution. Observations from the Millstone Hill Incoherent Scatter Radar have established constraints on the magnitude and spatial extent of the PEFs, though information on UT or longitudinal variability is lacking since the observations originate from a fixed location. A simple polarization jet model is combined with the corotational electric field and an empirical model of the high latitude convection; the resulting convection pattern is used to drive the Utah State University Time Dependent Ionospheric Model (TDIM). Simulations are carried out to determine the impact of the polarization jet in the mid- and high-latitude F-region. Our goal is to determine the storm-time geo-effectiveness of the PEF. The effects of particular interest are the positive and negative storm phases, and the afternoon sector storm enhanced density feature (SED).
