Low altitude passes of the Polar spacecraft across the southern auroral oval and polar cap near the dawn-dusk terminator plane have been surveyed during periods of prolonged southward interplanetary magnetic field. Over the nightside polar cap a classical magnetic perturbation pattern appears with magnetic field lines pulled back over the poles toward the magnetotail. Over the auroral oval the perturbation pattern is that of field lines being pulled at high altitudes toward the sun. The current loop associated with the cross polar cap flow is about one-quarter that associated with the return flow along the auroral oval. This is consistent with the need for greater magnetic stress to overcome the ionospheric drag in the auroral zone than over the polar cap. The strength of both current loops is proportional to the strength of the dawn to dusk electric field. Over the dayside the field-aligned currents are more complicated as expected for a strongly reconnecting dayside magnetopause.
